What's the story behind "slow salsa"?

Almost everyone in the Peru Crew comes from a ballroom dance background - in fact, that's how we're all connected. The last night during the hike of the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, we stopped at a lodge setup on the trail. The lodge had a variety of music playing and we were compelled to start dancing. The staff at the lodge saw us dancing and assumed we wanted to salsa, immediately switching the music to exclusively latin music. That got old after a few salsas so we tried to ask for other latin music, like rumba. Our requests were only met with confusion and the only response we got was "salsa?" After trying to explain we were trying to get slower music, we got the response "slow salsa?" And hence, the joke that search for rumba resulting in slow salsa was born...
